Bunnyhop VS J-Hop

Bunnyhop vs. J-hop:

"Everyone knows the bunnyhop, where both wheels go up at the same time. Most of the time, the J-hop is safer, more efficient and more stylish. You pick up the front wheel first then bring the rear wheel up to the same level; both wheels land at the same time. The J-hop allows you to change your line or body position more easily. It also requires less energy to jump large obstacles."

One big difference:
For bunnyhopping, you shouldn't touch your brakes at all because you usually need the speed. For J-hops, keep one finger on the rear brake so you can stop right up until your back wheel leaves the ground. If you want to keep your speed and the obstacle is only a couple of inches tall, the bunnyhop is probably better.

How to J Hop on a Mountain Bike

1. Start riding on your bike at a comfortable pace, maybe 4-6mph. Keep yourself in the center of the bike at first.
2. Bend down and lean forward a little bit.
Push down on the shocks (front) and lift up with explosive action. Your front should be 1-1.5ft off the ground for best results.
3. This is the part where everyone messes up. You are not going to just lift up and hope the rear comes up; there is a trick to it. The point is that you have to leave the rear of the bike weightless by tapping off the pedals, while still lifting up on the handlebars and foward.
4. Level off to clear the object better, or just to get more air. While in the air, push forward and kinda "rev" the handlebars although twisting the handlebars is not always necessary, making the rear wheel level with the front.
5. Make your landing. Try landing on the rear tire or on both. Landing the front tire first might mess you up, unless you have awesome control. If you're j-hopping high or off an object, try absorbing the landing with your body by crouching at the bottom of the land, like a chain reaction from the bottom to the top.

One method for clearing obstacles such as logs is a modified "j-hop" (or whatever you're calling it...*shrugs*). The technique involves manualing into the log and just barely setting the front wheel on top of it. At the same time the front wheel touches, you can slightly weight the front wheel and hop/lunge forward while lifting the back wheel and let the front roll over the obstacle. Make sure you shift your weight back at this point so you don't eat it. If you do it right, your rear wheel will just tap the top of the log on your way through.

The key is getting the timing down. Once you become proficient at slower speeds, you can gradually try it faster and faster. As your skills progress (and depending on the size of the log), you will find it unnecessary to touch with the front, and voila, you've hopped it.

As always, practice, practice. Bonus points are given for manualing out the back side. :)

j-hop

A mountain biking term describing the action of pulling up on the handle bars as you hop over an obstacle. The vector of travel is indicative of the letter "j".
